Government Procurement Policy: Review of Implementation

The Ministry's Regulatory and Competition Policy Branch has completed a review of the implementation of Government Procurement Policy. In its first part the review assessed the effective implementation of the current policy by core government departments and wider government agencies. The second part of the review considered the role of government procurement in driving and supporting innovation in the New Zealand economy.

The review documents have been submitted to Ministers and work to implement their recommendations is underway. As a result of the findings of the review, a new procurement development group is being established within MED's RCP Branch and this will focus both on raising the level of professionalism in public sector procurement and on promoting networking and linkages with industry and relevant government economic development programmes.

Internationally competitive firms will benefit from government departments and others in the public sector taking a more open and strategic approach to their purchasing decisions (as will the public sector itself). Taxpayers will also benefit from increased levels of value for the money spent by the public sector.
