Food and Beverage Sector Engagement

The Food and Beverage Taskforce was established in December 2004 under the terms of the sector engagement framework of May 2004.

The Cabinet Paper Food and Beverage Sector Engagement summarises the results of consultation by officials with sector stakeholders. It confirms that there is significant support for engagement with the Food and Beverage sector, so long as key sector players are involved and government is willing to engage on the whole range of issues of interest to the sector. Terms of Reference for the Food and Beverage engagement are attached as Annex 1.

The Taskforce released its report Smart Food, Cool Beverage: New Zealand's Future in the Food and Beverage Sector [link to NZTE website] on 28 August 2006. The report underlines the importance of the sector to the New Zealand economy. The sector generates over half of our export earnings from merchandise trade and directly or indirectly employs one in five members of the working population. Over the last ten years it has recorded a compound annual growth rate of approximately five per cent per annum.

On 10 July 2007 the Government released its response to Taskforce's report. The response has four components.

  • A vision which describes the role and direction the sector needs to take in as a key sector in New Zealand's economic transformation
  • A package of six key initiatives directed at key taskforce themes
  • A set of wider initiatives which impact positively on the sector
  • And a one-to-one response to each recommendation.
