Business Law Reform Bill

Business Law Reform Bills are aimed at incrementally improving business laws by revising several statutes at once.  Two have been enacted to date, making over 200 changes to 15 or so Acts of Parliament.

The Bills aim to:

  • clarify and update various statutory provisions to ensure effect is given to the intended purpose of the provision;
  • remove unnecessary compliance costs; and
  • ensure consistency between different legislative requirements.

The BLRB 2006 was introduced to the House on 27 June and passed its first reading on 19 July 2006. The Bill contains financial reporting and credit union reforms, as well as amendments to the Companies Act, Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act and two insurance-related Acts. This is the third such Bill aimed at making incremental improvements to business laws.
