Geographical Indications (Wines and Spirits) Registration Act 2006
The Geographical Indications (Wines and Spirits) Registration Act 2006 was passed by Parliament in November 2006. The Act replaces the Geographical Indications Act 1994, which has never been brought into force and is repealed as from 14 April 2008. The Act will establish a registration system for geographical indications for wines and spirits only; redefine the meaning of a geographical indication; include the limitations and exceptions to protection ensuring that legitimate use of terms in the New Zealand market are not affected; and clarify the relationship between trade marks and geographical indications. The Act is not yet in force.
