Phase 2: Bioprospecting Working Groups
The Ministry has convened four working groups focussing on different aspects of bioprospecting policy development.
The aspects are:
- Group One: New Zealand's approach to negotiations on an international regime on access and benefit sharing under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
- Group Two: Opportunities offered by bioprospecting for enhancing New Zealand's science sector, including outcomes for Maori.
- Group Three: Intellectual property rights, including their potential for protection and promotion of traditional knowledge.
- Group Four: Precedent frameworks from overseas jurisdictions, including options for regulating inappropriate activity (but without over-regulating beneficial or traditional activities), and definitions of bioprospecting.
Group participants include scientists and bioprospecting practitioners, academics, iwi and representatives of local and central government.
Names of group members and records of meetings which have had their notes approved are contained in the page relating to each group.
