Government RWC Steering Group
In early 2006 the Government established a RWC Steering Group involving Chief Executives of the key government agencies involved, to oversee support and provide leadership across government for activities and services relating to hosting the Rugby World Cup.
The Steering Group is led by the Ministry of Economic Development and meets on a quarterly basis to ensure they maintain a close awareness of all RWC issues. The objectives of the Steering Group are:
- To ensure government agencies are adequately prepared to meet the challenge of hosting RWC 2011;
- Ensuring that government services are well-coordinated;
- Leveraging trade, tourism and investment opportunities arising from RWC 2011;
- Managing the relationships with external stakeholders including local government, industry bodies and Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd; and
- Keeping Ministers informed of major developments and issues.
The Steering Group's mandate has since been extended to include coordination and support for other major events hosted in New Zealand, such as the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup, the 2010 Rowing World Championships and the 2015 Cricket World Cup (co-hosted with Australia). These events present opportunities to test activities ahead of the 2011 RWC, as well as further promoting New Zealand as a major events destination.
Government support for the RWC, as well as being a shareholder in RNZ 2011 Ltd, has evolved into two work streams:
