Regulating Biofuel Quality
With the introduction of biofuels and biofuel blends into the New Zealand fuel mix it is vital that appropriate specifications and labelling requirements are put in place for biodiesel, ethanol, and for blends of these with petrol and diesel. This will ensure that compliant fuel is suitable for our vehicle fleet.
Petrol and diesel quality is controlled by the Petroleum Products Specifications Regulations 2002 (PPSR). These regulations will be replaced on the 1st of July by the Engine Fuel Specifications Regulations 2008. These new regulations set minimum requirements for petrol, ethanol, diesel, biodiesel, and blends of these fuels. The Cabinet paper below outlines the agreed ethanol and biodiesel specifications which are included in these new regulations.
