Environmental Agreements

New Zealand is party to several multilateral environmental agreements. The Ministry is responsible for the implementation of the Basel Convention, OECD Decision and Waigani Convention all concerning the trransboundary movement of hazardous wastes. We also implement the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

  • Importing or Exporting Waste in New Zealand
If you want to import or export a waste you must check if that waste is classified as hazardous under the international Conventions New Zealand is a party to. If it is classed as hazardous you are likely to require a permit to import or export it.
  • Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996
The Ozone Layer Protection Act, first passed in 1990 and updated in 1996, implements and enhances obligations New Zealand has under the Montreal Protocol to phase out a range of ozone depleting substances.
