Welcome to the Ministry of Economic Development's (MED) web pages on Regional Economic Development strategies.
MED has produced this resource, the "Regional Economic Development Strategy Guidelines", to contribute to the continual development of high quality strategies. These guidelines have drawn on best practice from New Zealand and across the world for formulating strategies and recognise that having a strong strategic direction is the key to harnessing a region’s resources.
This easy-to-use, web-based guide has been put together with considerable input from the Economic Development Association of New Zealand, Local Government New Zealand, economic development agencies and several government departments.
This resource is aimed at economic development practitioners, and their stakeholders, as they work through the development of a regional economic development strategy. It is not intended as a detailed instruction manual on how to prepare for regional economic development, but rather a source of information that provides:
- An overview of economic development in regions;
- A framework, which sets out seven phases that should be part of developing a strategy; and
- Guidelines on matters to note at each phase identified in the framework
