In 2002, the government initially consulted with stakeholders on bioprospecting policy.
In November 2006, Cabinet agreed that bioprospecting policy should be advanced as part of government’s normal policy development processes.
Bioprospecting Review
On Monday 18 November 2002, the Associate Minister of Industry and Regional Development released a discussion paper Bioprospecting in New Zealand: Discussing the Options. The paper covered the opportunities available, problems with the current regulatory framework and the advantages of having a bioprospecting policy. Submissions to the discussion paper closed on 28 February 2003. The Ministry completed a review of the submissions on the discussion document and a summary was made available to the public. The Ministry hosted a one-day information seminar on bioprospecting on 21 February 2003.

Major issues raised in Submissions in 2002
The Ministry of Economic Development received 45 submissions on the discussion document Bioprospecting in New Zealand: Discussing the Options. Submitters raised a number of common issues and these are addressed in this paper.

Bioprospecting in New Zealand Seminar
The Ministry of Economic Development hosted a seminar to consider issues relevant to bioprospecting in New Zealand. The seminar provided an opportunity to learn more about the issues and was a forum for group discussion.
