The World Intellectual Property Organization Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (the IGC) is working on a set of draft Policy Objectives and Guiding Principles for the protection of Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions.
At its Tenth Session in Geneva last December 2006, the IGC agreed on a set of key questions about Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions and is now seeking input from member states on these questions.
Member states have been asked to provide answers to these questions by 31 March 2007.
The Ministry's Intellectual Property Policy group will be hosting an afternoon workshop on 12 March 2007, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, in order to generate feedback from stakeholders on the issues put forward by the IGC and consequently inform New Zealand’s position. The workshop will be held at the Ministry of Economic Development, 33 Bowen Street, Wellington. You may register online. Registration closes 5 March 2007.
We invite you to consult Have Your Say for more information on the IGC process and New Zealand's involvement, links to the WIPO documents, and on how to make a written submission. For further information, please contact Paryse Suddith on 04-472 0030.
