New Zealand's Regional Economic Performance
New Zealand's Regional Economic Performance report covers economic growth data for 12 New Zealand regions for the 2000-2004 time period and includes various other economic and demographic since 1998 to provide a better picture of regional performance and trends.
MED commissioned the report seeking a better understanding of the economic growth and innovation performance across different New Zealand regions and the causes of any variation. Explaining differences in economic performance is a complex task and only a combination of factors is likely to provide a satisfactory explanation. By exploring possible explanations for regional variations in growth, the report can help to inform future policy development. In addition, it provides useful insights into the current data situation with regard to regional economic statistics.
Readers should note that, in the absence of official data on regional GDP, the report uses NZIER's regional GDP estimates. As with any set of estimates, there are both theoretical and data issues that may affect the accuracy of the estimation process, but there is no reason to believe that there are significant deviations from what official statistics would show.
