Quarterly Updates
All prices and movements below are in real 2007 dollars.
- Retail price of premium petrol decreased by 1% to 175 cents/litre for June quarter of 2008 compared to the previous quarter.
- Regular petrol retail price for June quarter 2008 was 169 cents/litre, also 1% higher than the previous quarter. It was 8% higher than June quarter 2007.
- Retail price of diesel increased by 1% to 126 cents/litre for June quarter of 2008. This was 25% higher than the same quarter of the previous year.
- Domestic electricity prices are updated to May 2008.

Annual Summary
All statistics in this commentary apply to Calendar Year 2007. All prices and movements below are in real 2007 dollars.
In real terms (Calendar Year 2007 prices), New Zealand's transport fuels prices were considerably lower than the late 70's and early 80's, but they have begun to climb since 2000. Nonetheless, premium petrol and regular petrol retail prices both decreased by about 2% to 161c/l and 155c/l, respectively in 2007. Diesel retail prices decreased by 9% to 105 c/l in 2007.

In real terms (Calendar Year 2007 prices), national average electricity price has levelled off at 17 c/kWh. In 2007, electricity price for residential sector climbed up to 22 c/kWh, which was 5% higher than the previous year. Electricity prices for commercial increased by 2% to 14 c/kWh and industrial sector decreased by 2% to 9 c/kWh in 2007.
On the other hand, for non-transport fuel prices, heavy fuel oil rose to 17 $/GJ while light fuel oil prices decreased to 16 $/GJ. Likewise, natural gas prices used by commercial, residential and industrial sectors, have all decreased by 36%, 12% and 35%, respectively in real terms (Calendar Year 2007 prices).
