Quality Regulation Review
The government has completed a review of the quality of New Zealand's regulatory frameworks. The findings of the review were released by the Minister of Commerce on 6 September 2007, and the Final Report to Cabinet and the Sector Studies Report were made publicly available. The review concluded that the current regulatory environment for business is in fairly good shape, but that there is scope for improvement. The review made good progress in addressing a number of the specific issues relating to the existing stock of regulation and the regulatory process disciplines that will ensure the quality of future regulation.
The quality regulation review was announced by the government in May 2006 to ensure that New Zealand's regulatory environment is supportive of the government's economic transformation agenda. A Ministerial Group led by the Minister of Commerce and for Small Business was convened to undertake the review. The Group was supported by an inter-departmental Taskforce comprising of senior officials from key government agencies and led by the Ministry of Economic Development. Two Milestone Reports were provided as part of the review. The First Milestone Report was considered by Cabinet on 30 October 2006 and released by Hon Lianne Dalziel on 1 November 2006. The Second Milestone Report was considered by Cabinet on 30 April 2007 and released by Hon Lianne Dalziel on 2 May 2007.
Even though the review has been completed, the government still wants to hear about the regulatory concerns of business. To submit a concern, please visit the Business Consultation Website.
