Māori Trade Marks Advisory Committee


The Māori Trade Marks Advisory Committee ("the Committee") is established under section 177 of the Trade Marks Act 2002 ("the Act") to advise the Commissioner of Trade Marks ("the Commissioner") as to the likely offensiveness of trade marks containing Māori text and imagery.

In accordance with the Act, members of the Committee are statutorily required to have knowledge of te ao Māori and tikanga Māori. Other desirable attributes include having an understanding of and experience in te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, as well as business and/or legal expertise and strong Māori networks. Members will be appointed by the Commissioner for a period of up to three years, with provision for reappointment. Members will receive a sitting fee in accordance with the Fees and Travelling Allowances Act 1951.

Nominations for members were called for and applications closed on 23 May 2003. The Commissioner will appoint members to the Committee who are drawn from the highest calibre of persons possessing the requisite knowledge and skills.
