Be prepared to re-tune your FREEVIEW|HD TV
Broadcast frequencies for Freeview|HD® are changing in various regions this year, starting in Dunedin.
Affected viewers will need to re-tune their digital set-top box, or TV if it has Freeview|HD® built in. Re-tuning can be done simply, using the remote control and selecting the menu button.
The channel frequencies are changing to ensure that New Zealand’s radio spectrum is freed up for other uses and emerging technologies.
This year’s frequency changes begin in Dunedin on Tuesday 24 January, followed by Hawkes Bay on Tuesday 31 January. Manawatu, Tauranga, Waikato, Wellington and Canterbury are scheduled to switch frequencies between March and August. The Kapiti Coast switched to new frequencies in August last year.
Ian Hutchings, spokesperson for the Ministry of Economic Development, says: “A message will pop up on the screen of affected TVs this week in Dunedin, prompting viewers to re-tune their TV or digital set-top box.”
This change doesn’t affect viewers using Sky, Freeview satellite or those not yet watching digital television – only those using Freeview|HD®.
“Those who watch Freeview|HD® and share an aerial with others, such as in an apartment building or retirement village, should contact their property manager for advice on whether their installation requires any modification,” Mr Hutchings says.
Managers of apartments, hotels or motels are advised to talk to an installer prior to the frequencies being changed to see if any technical adjustments are needed.
Helpful advice on re-tuning is available at the Ministry website, www.retune.co.nz. Alternatively, people can call the Radio Spectrum Management helpline on 0508 336 633 if they have any problems re-tuning their TV or set-top box.
