Broadband in business

— filed under:

The roll-out of ultra-fast broadband has the potential to transform New Zealand businesses. It offers opportunities to save costs, increase productivity, extend reach, and offer new products and services.

It will be easier for New Zealand businesses to do business with the rest of the world.

Crown Fibre Holdings and the Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand recently undertook a study of new businesses looking at potential uptake of fibre.

When asked about their likelihood to connect to ultra-fast broadband within a year of it being available, 82 percent of the 280 respondents said they were likely, highly likely or definitely would connect. Around 95 percent of respondents said they would connect if ultra-fast broadband was available in their area. Some 58 percent of businesses currently without fibre would do the same.

Survey respondents foresee the main benefits of ultra-fast broadband as including future strategy, staff productivity, staff location and customer relationship management. Around 70 percent of respondents said they would consider investing in collaborative tools, voice-over IP and cloud-based applications and services to leverage the benefits of ultra-fast broadband.

Remote working attracted an unusually high degree of interest, and indicates New Zealand’s potential strength as a lifestyle location of choice for employees from abroad.

The development will put fast fibre within the reach of small and medium-size businesses so they can enjoy the same advantages of larger companies.  They will be able to receive infrastructure, applications, and business processes as services over the internet.

It will give businesses access to first-class back-up and support services for services such as accounting and IT and give them the ability to service remote markets around the world. It offers flexible location and a flexible workforce by being able to have staff working in different locations.
