Latest New Zealand Energy Quarterly released

The September quarter edition of the New Zealand Energy Quarterly and updated residential electricity price information has been released by the Ministry of Economic Development today.
For the three months to 30 September 2011:

  • Crude oil production was up nine percent on June quarter.
  • The quarterly average petrol price dropped by three percent due to the strong New Zealand dollar and lower international fuel prices.
  • Gas supply increased 17 percent on the June quarter after six months of relatively low production due to maintenance shutdowns.
  • The average residential electricity price increased by only 0.3 percent this quarter.
  • Higher electricity demand and lower than average hydro in-flows during late August and September saw the renewable electricity generation decline to 72 percent of total generation. The contribution of renewables to total electricity generation was 74 percent for the same quarter in 2010.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation were 47 percent more than the previous quarter due to increased generation from coal and gas, and 18 percent ahead of the same quarter in 2010.

Information on the full range of energy publications produced by the Ministry of Economic Development, along with the latest quarterly data, can be found in the energy data and modelling section.
