International Partnership for Energy Development in Island Nations

This partnership between New Zealand, the United States and Iceland aims to advance the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies in island nations and territories.

We represent New Zealand on the group's Steering Committee.

Since becoming operational in August 2008, the partnership has brought together governments, policy advisors, technical experts, and financial leaders to develop clean energy deployment projects.

It focuses on deployment, rather than research and development.

Most project funding for projects is intended to be generated from the private sector.  Projects focusing on the Pacific region are being developed.

EDIN structure

The main founding document for the International Partnership for Energy Development in Island Nations (EDIN) is its terms of reference, which provide two categories of involvement and the establishment of a steering committee.

The EDIN Steering Committee meets at least once a year to:

  • Approve projects and ensure their consistency with the partnership's goals.
  • Set priorities.
  • Create ways for partners and other island nations to share their expertise.

The Steering Committee is supported by a small Secretariat located at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Denver in the United States.
