The role of the Resource Management Act
The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) is New Zealand's main piece of legislation that sets out how we should manage our environment.
It provides the framework for management of natural resources on land and in the territorial sea - out to 12 nautical miles.
National policy statements developed under the RMA help local government make decisions that balance national benefits and local costs. They may be important for energy developments.
We have commissioned work to inform improvements to the RMA.
