Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Hon Gerry Brownlee is leading efforts to deliver the Christchurch Stadium as part of the city’s recovery and rebuild. The Minister is assisted by officials at the Ministry of Economic Development and CERA.

Christchurch Stadium Trust

Christchurch Stadium Trust is a charitable trust recently established to construct and operate Christchurch Stadium on an on-going basis. The current trustees for the construction phase are Sir John Hansen, Michael Aitken (Christchurch City Council), Neville Harris (Ministry of Economic Development) and Jim Anderton.

Sir John is convenor of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Review Panel and a retired High Court judge. Both Sir John and Neville Harris have considerable experience in stadium construction, Sir John being the chairman of Dunedin venues which operates Forsyth Barr Stadium and Neville having represented Government’s interests during the redevelopment of Eden Park stadium for the Rugby World Cup. Michael Aitken is the General Manager of Community Services at Christchurch City Council, with responsibility for the city’s other sports and recreation facilities. Jim Anderton is a former Deputy Prime Minister, Cabinet Minister and long-time MP for the Christchurch electorate of Wigram.

Our establishment trustees will oversee the commissioning of the stadium, leading up to the handover of the venue to more permanent trustees when it becomes operational. The trustees later nominated to manage the business of the stadium over the longer term will represent the community groups who are likely to make significant use of the stadium.

Joe Flynn has been appointed as the Acting Chief Executive of Christchurch Stadium during the construction phase and reports directly to the Trust.

Our partners

The cost for constructing the temporary stadium is being funded by financial contributions from the Government and the Christchurch City Council, and will be supported by hire fees from sporting codes keen to use the venue (such as the Canterbury Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Union). The stadium is also being built on land offered to the city by the Christchurch City Council.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available for corporates and suppliers of goods and services to the stadium.

We thank our immediate commercial and residential neighbours, including Addington Raceway and CBS Arena, for their encouragement and patience as dirty and noisy construction work gets underway.
