I'm David Binnie, General Manager of New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals.

  • We manage the government’s oil, gas, mineral and coal resources – known as the Crown minerals estate.
  • We advise on operational regulation and promote investment in the mineral estate.

Our teams

Business Services

We manage the online permitting system and royalty collection and provides communications and administrative support.

 

Information Services

We are responsible for collecting, storing and disseminating all geo-scientific data required to be provided under prospecting, exploration and mining permits. We maintain and provide access to “core” - the physical samples taken during prospecting and exploration.

 

Iwi Relationship

We are responsible for liaising with Māori about the responsible economic development of New Zealand’s natural resources for the benefit of all. We also provide advice to NZP&M and MED on iwi engagement.

 

Minerals

We are responsible for issuing permits and ensuring ongoing compliance for all minerals other than petroleum. We contribute to the development of investment in the mineral estate, liaises with industry on issues affecting them, and assists on policy issues affecting minerals.

 

Petroleum

We are responsible for issuing permits and ensuring compliance for petroleum. Our focus is on developing responsible exploration activity in New Zealand with a view to increasing oil and gas discoveries.
